Abstract The paper addresses technical implementation and system design of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) aimed to operate in a multitask environment. The chosen control approach is centralized control, but it relies strongly on the distributed control systems implemented locally on the sites. The proposed and described control architecture has been validated in an actual operating environment with commercial and noncommercial battery energy storage systems. The approach applies standard International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) communication protocols and other widely used, industry-proven practices. As the main result, it is shown that such a system is technically feasible. The focus is on the technical implementation of the control system, not on the control logic. For the sake of clarity, only an overview of the control logic is provided. The chosen communication protocols ensure reliable operation of the system, but certain issues remain unsolved related to the ease of scalability with the chosen architecture.
