Monitoring tool wear during the turning process

Automatic in-process detection of tool wear is an important requirement in unmanned machining. Cutting tool wear has been investigated previously by applying frequency analysis to the tool vibration and cutting force signals. When applied to turning operations this technique provided a successful means for assessing changes in the cutting conditions. This paper shows how the force and vibration signatures change due to the tool wear and how they can Joe used to monitor on-line cutting tool wear.
