Technologies for the more precise press-forming of automobile parts

Abstract In this paper, technologies for the more precise press forming of automobile body parts in Japanese automotive industries are described. Focusing on large-sized pressed parts, the recent requirements and future objectives of press-forming technologies for high precision are discussed. Improvements in fitting quality and surface quality in press forming or in hemming, for outer panels, are considered. For inner panels and structural members, specific examples of counter-measures for springback and camber in hat-shape forming and U-bend forming are discussed.
