THE REDUCTION OF SEEDLING SUGAR-BEET STANDS BY HEPTACHLOR-IMPREGNATED FERTILIZER

Ammonium phosphate fertilizer (11-48-0) impregnated with solvents and heptachlor-solvent combinations when placed in contact with germinating sugarbeet seed was phytotoxic. The phytotoxicity varied with the solvent and increased with the addition of heptachlor. Seedling stands were increased over untreated plots when 11-48-0 was placed on both sides of the germinating seed, but the addition of solvents and heptachlor reduced the beneficial effects of fertilizer.
