NEW FEATURES IN THE "CANADIAN CAPACITY GUIDE FOR SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS"

District 7 - Canada - of the Institute of Transportation Engineers recently published the Canadian Capacity Guide for Signalized Intersections. The guide is the first part of a national effort to identify suitable capacity related techniques for a variety of urban conditions in Canada. The initiative arose from user needs that could not be met by existing documents. Elements of traffic signal analysis and design were evolving as adaptations of procedures developed in other countries and research within Canada. The purpose of this article is to illustrate some of the new aspects and procedures of the guide. Canadian capacity analysis for signalized intersections is based on a lane by lane saturation flow procedure that allows for calibration to local community conditions. It is suited both for analytical and design tanks.
