State of the Art of Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns

The state of the art of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns including experimental and analytical work is presented. The general response of CFT columns is discussed with an emphasis on the nonlinear behavior, composite action, bond effects, hysteresis response, and local buckling of columns with large diameter to wall thickness ratios. Research on steel jacketing that is used as a retrofitting scheme is also discussed. This is followed by an overview of analytical work on CFTs. Finally, a comparison between the different design codes is made, and the need for further research is identified.
