Simultaneous fractures of bilateral femoral and humeral necks after seizure: one-stage total hip arthroplasty using direct anterior approach

INTRODUCTION F emoral neck fractures are commonly seen in elderly patients because of low-energy trauma, while in young individuals they are caused by high-energyrelated trauma. Fractures are typically unilateral in the vast majority of cases. Bilateral femoral neck fractures are relatively uncommon, but can occur in the presence of predisposing factors other than trauma. Osteoporosis, renal osteodystrophy, hypocalcemic convulsions, bone tumors, hormonal disorders, and epileptic attacks are often hidden under the cause for these fractures. Bilateral femoral and humeral neck fractures were observed in the patient studied after he had a grand mal epileptic seizure. The patient had no history of trauma. The femoral neck fractures were attributed to muscle contractions. Since the study concerns one retrospective case report, it did not require approval of an institutional review board. The patient consented to publication of his case.
