Applications of DNP3 and SCADA protocols

The chapter describes the practical issues in installing a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system based on Distributed Network Protocol Version 3 (DNP3) and lists the steps for configuring an operational system. The chapter presents details of the Port Hedland Town Water Supply SCADA System installed in Australia. This state of the art SCADA system provides monitoring and control over the borefields, pumping stations, and reservoirs, and is main distribution system supplying fresh water to the town of Port Hedland, Western Australia. The chapter provides an overview of the system, and then focuses on the way the DNP3 protocol is used in the project. It describes the Hunter Watertech (HWT) PDS range of RTU types used in the project, which includes PDS500, PDS Compact 500, PDS Compact 550, and PDS 104. These devices are highly adaptable, and are able to support a range of communications protocols and carry out roles including RTU, data concentrator, store and forward device, and as a bridge to convert between protocols.
