Modified short backfire antenna for antennas-on-package applications

In this paper, a new configuration of short backfire antennas is proposed. It is fed by an open-ended rectangular waveguide from the main reflector to comply with the antenna on package requirement and eliminate the back cavity. The strip-type sub-reflector ensures a highly directive radiation pattern, and a pair of matching rings is placed adjacent to it for broadband matching. This modified short backfire antenna is easy to fabricate and suitable for use as the AoP. A 10-GHz prototype antenna is fabricated and tested. It exhibits a wide bandwidth, broadside unidirectional radiation pattern, moderate and stable in-band gains.
