The effect of anticellular serum on plaque formation by enteroviruses in human amnion tissue culture.

HABEL, Hornibrook, Gregg, Silverberg and Takemoto (1958) and Quersin-Thiry (1958) reported independently that the cytopathic effect of certain viruses in tissue culture was inhibited by antiserum prepared against the cells of the culture. The experiments were carried out using test tube cultures of tissue which had been inoculated previously with anticellular serum in sub-cytotoxic doses. Results were assessed by the presence or absence of cytopathic effect following inoculation with various viruses compared to that seen in control cultures without anticellular serum. The viruses included those belonging to the enterovirus groups and both studies reported that the inhibition was selective. kidney tissue cultures the cytopathic effect of the types of poliovirus, Coxsackie viruses of Group B and some the viruses was not inhibited most ECHO viruses Coxsackie virus type were inhibited.
