Abstract An attempt has been made in this study to develop an expert system for machinability data selection to assist part programmers and process planners in their decision making processes for toolholders, inserts and cutting conditions with future extension to an integrated machining system. The procedures to arrive at the appropriate solutions are encoded from factual and procedural knowledge stored in a knowledge bank. As such the knowledge bank plays an important role in providing valued information and differs from the existing data bank concept.
