Use of adaptive filter for timing recovery for data storage channels

Adaptive filters have been traditionally used in data storage channels mainly for equalization purposes. In this paper, an adaptive filters is investigated for timing recovery so that equalization and timing recovery can be carried out simultaneously. Simulation results show that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the adaptive filter timing recovery (AFTR) method is comparable to other existing schemes. The main advantages of AFTR are that it is potentially simpler and can lead to a fully digital implementation.
