Martensitic Transformation in In1-xTlx Alloys

The martensitic transformation in In 1- x Tl x alloys with x =0.28, 0.29, 0.31, 0.31 * and 0.35 has been stuided by means of simultaneous measurements of the fractional change of sound velocity Δ v s / v s and the sound attenuation coefficient α( T ) as a function of temperature T . Main results are as follows: (i) For the samples with x from 0.28 to 0.31 * there has been observed a dip or a plateau or a kinick-point at T from 98 K to 50 K, respectively, in the plot of Δ v s / v s versus T on cooling. On the other hand, in α( T ) versus T a single or double peaks were observed at T from 98 K to 55 K, corresponding to the results in Δ v s / v s versus T . (ii) The features of the anomalies are somewhat complicated; there was no observation to be ascribed to the effect of the transformation into a metastable state which is expected to occur in the samples with \(x\lesssim 0.31\).
