Abstract : A new nonlinear time-domain method for predicting large amplitude motions for a ship advancing in a seaway has been developed. The seaway is represented by a second-order Stokes wave. A consistent nonlinear theory is derived by assuming that the frequency of encounter is small. Results obtained by computer codes show good agreement with linear theory for small-amplitude waves, whereas large differences are found between the nonlinear method and linear theory for steeper waves.
