Delivering an alternative medicine resource to the user's desktop via World Wide Web

Abstract This paper discusses the design and implementation of a World Wide Web (WWW) based Alternative Medicine virtual resource. This home page was created in response to the huge demand for alternative medicine information by professionals, researchers, students and the general public (URL: http://www.libraries.wayne.edu/shiffman/altmed/altmed.html). The rapid growth of WWW makes it possible for people to access information on the Internet which may not be available by traditional means. This resource integrates regional, national, and international resources and delivers library services to the user's desktop. This paper also details the goals, structure and organizational schemes of the system and addresses design issues for building a comprehensive, virtual resource about alternative medicine including international collaboration for data collection and information selection criteria.
