STRATEGIES FOR THE ACCURATE DETERMINATION OF ORTHOMETRIC HEIGHTS FROM GPS

AbstractIn order for Global Positioning System (GPS) derived ellipsoidal heights to have any physical meaning in a surveying or engineering application, they must be transformed to orthometric heights. A practical approach is presented where gravimetrically and geometrically derived geoid heights are combined to accurately recover orthometric heights from GPS. This approach is supported by results from three GPS controlled gravity surveys conducted in Western Australia.
