Determination of black spots on roads using the ITS infrastructure

The use of the ITS infrastructure enables the collection of high-quality data on dangerous locations on the road also known as black spots. Identification of the roads with statistically a high level of traffic accidents would help reduce the number of traffic accidents and increase road safety. Using the technology to communicate between the vehicle and the infrastructure, i.e. a vehicle-to-infrastructure communication device which records the parameters of the trip, it is possible to obtain information about the dangerous areas on the road. Such a device provides safe vehicle tracking and gathers information on the parameters of the vehicle, through a combination of video cameras, the global positioning system (GPS) and numerous sensors. The vehicle with an integrated pre-defined incident situation sends information about the incident to the database with all the relevant data about a particular event. By analyzing and processing data the obtained in this way it is possible to determine the hot spots before accidents happen. In addition, the system for collecting telemetry data of vehicles helps to gain an insight into the circumstances that preceded the crash. To summarize, the data collected by means of the ITS infrastructure can contribute considerably to further reduce the dangers on the road.
