Systems and Tools for CIS

In this chapter, we will review several tools, some new and some old, that help achieve CIS goals. We will start out the chapter reviewing some of the fundamental challenges of designing CIS systems. Then we will divide up our discussion on CIS systems into two categories: system-mediated collaboration, and user-mediated collaboration. Under the former category, we will review Cerchiamo and Querium, and under the latter category, we will review Ariadne, SearchTogether, and Coagmento. We will also walk through designing, developing, and deploying Coagmento system through formative evaluation process as a case study.
