In this chapter we look at the WHAT dimension of the architecture orientation framework. It conveys a basic understanding of architecture. We also present the significant building blocks that make up a system and their relationships to one another. Since the nature of systems and systems thinking are essential for your work as an architect, we also position these concepts in the context of architecture. After reading this chapter, you will be able to explain the general nature of architecture, differentiate between individual architecture disciplines and the most important building blocks of systems, and describe their relationships with one another.
