만국박람회의 변천과정과 역할에 관한 연구

Expo including recently held Global Fair & Festival 2009 Incheon, Shanghai Expo 2010, and Yeosu Expo 2012 has been concentrating attention from a lot of people in the inside and outside of Korea. Each nation regards Expo as a favorable opportunity to publicize its own culture and industry to the outer world. Thus, Expo is considered as one of the three biggest events along with World Cup and Olympics. This study intends to examine the significance and transition of Expo, the fair, and analyze how it affects human society in the economic, technological, and cultural aspect. The fair started from England in 1851 and leads Shanghai Expo, and it is divided into Registered Expositions and Recognized Expositions. Korean Fair participated in Paris Fair in 1990 since its first start in 1893. In 1962 60 years after that, the participation in Seattle Fair can be the start of modern fair. The fair shows various new techniques, so it largely contributes to advancing exhibition technology development, and holding an exhibition gives the large effect as well as changes into a theme park and activates the local economy. In addition, exhibits or technologies become the resources of museum exhibition methods. In conclusion, the fair serves as a place of promotion for social changes, innovation for exhibition technology development, and of experience to lead cultures.
