The Influence of Diffuser Channel Geometry on the Flow Range and Efficiency of a Centrifugal Compressor

A small centrifugal compressor was tested with a series of straight wedge diffusers which had included channel divergence angles 2θ ranging from 4° to 14°. Diffusers employing sidewall divergence were also tested. Detailed pressure measurements were made with all of the diffusers. A channel divergence angle of 12° was found to be optimum since increasing the divergence angle beyond 12° produced no efficiency improvements but reduced the flow range of the compressor. Channels employing sidewall divergence produced almost identical efficiency and flow range to channels of the same area ratio without sidewall divergence
