rightfully boasted one of the best bands in the state, if not in the entire nation. The organization was the envy of band directors far and wide. Throughout his secondary school days Jack spent much time playing alto saxophone in the band, and during his senior year he held first chair. And he put in many hours. School was in session 180 days a year, and the band met daily. That figure multiplied by the four years Jack spent in high school comes out to 720. Over 700 times he attended a class called "Band." For this he received credit toward graduation and grades on his academic report card. Now that Jack has graduated, what does he have to show for these 700 class periods? He can play his saxophone quite acceptably. He plays tastefully, with a good tone. He reads music accurately, and carefully does all that the notation tells him to do. He can follow precisely what a director indicates. In fact, the need for following directions seems to have made the greatest impression on him. When he
