IoT-Based Light Intensity Controller

Energy crisis is one of the major problems in the world today. According to Central Electricity board of India, about 6.7 TWh is consumed in public lighting, costing more than $500M annually [1]. Internet of Things (IoT) is an optimal solution to this problem. IoT has enabled us to control and monitor electronic devices remotely through the internet. This paper focuses on how the power consumed by the street lights can be saved by continuously monitoring the surrounding brightness and changing the light intensity accordingly using the MQTT protocol. This paper demonstrates how such a setup can be implemented for an outdoor street light and for an indoor lighting system of a building.
