Pruessmann, Klaas P.: Matrix Exercises and a Few Lessons from Optics: Graduate Adventures in the Early Days of Parallel MRI

This short article is dedicated to the author's recollections of the early days of parallel MRI, which coincided with his years as a PhD student and junior faculty member. His interest in this topic was first sparked by a seminal poster presentation that Dan Sodickson gave at the 1997 ISMRM meeting. It prompted the author to devote most of his graduate research to the role of radiofrequency fields in MRI, analogies with optics, principles of spatial encoding, and image reconstruction. Working on parallel MRI was particularly exciting due to its rapid introduction into the industrial realm as well as radiology practice. Keywords: parallel MRI; array detection; image reconstruction; SMASH; SENSE
