An Interdisciplinary Approach and Its Implications for Information Systems

Abstract StefanStieglitz,LinhDang-Xuan,AxelBruns,ChristophNeuberger SocialMediaAnalytics AnInterdisciplinaryApproachandItsImplicationsforInformationSystems Inthiscontribution,weintroduce“so-cialmediaanalytics”(SMA)asanemerg-inginterdisciplinaryresearchfieldthat,inourview,willhaveasignificantim-pactonsocialmedia-relatedfuturere-searchfromacrossdifferentacademicdisciplines.Despiteanumberofchal-lenges, we argue that SMA can pro-videotherdisciplines–includingIS–with methodological foundations forresearchthatfocusesonsocialmedia.Furthermore,webelievethatSMAcanhelp IS research to develop decision-makingordecision-aidingframeworksby tackling the issue of social media-related performance measurement,whichhasbeenchallenginguntilnow.Moreover, SMA can provide architec-turaldesignsandsolutionframeworksfor new social media-based applica-tionsandinformationsystems.Finally,wecallforaninterdisciplinarySMAre-searchagendaaswellasasignificantlyincreased level of interdisciplinary re-search co-operation, which must aimto generate significant advancementsinscientificmethodsforanalyzingso-cial media, as well as to answer re-searchquestionsfromacrossdifferentdisciplines.Keywords: Socialmediaanalytics,In-formationsystems,Bigdata,Interdisci-plinarymethods,Researchagenda,In-terdisciplinaryco-operation
