AN OPERATIONAL USERS APPROACH TO THE INTRODUCTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ICA TO A LARGE INLAND SEWAGE WORKS

ABSTRACT The paper presents the result of four years work on the introduction of ICA in a large inland sewage works. It describes some of the instrumentation purchased and that developed within the Division when faced with unsuitable commercial products. It describes the computer based system from the outstations right through to the central mini-computer together with the software, which was developed on site. All the work was carried out under the supervision of an operational manager including installation and software development. The control aspects of the development include a description of overcoming poor air distribution problems by using differential head adjustment. An intelligent sludge blanket probe described is the result of three years work. Some simple guidelines are presented in an attempt to help any technical operational manager starting on the path to automation in avoiding some common pitfalls.
