Evaluation of the stain Viablue for the rapid estimation of viable yeast cells

Viablue can be used as a differential viability stain for yeast cells. Differential staining using fluorescence microscopy and viability showed a good correlation (r= 0·99). For practical purposes the staining procedure takes only a few minutes and appears ideally suited to such rapid analytical procedures as the direct epifluorescent filter technique (DEFT) and automated quality control testing of foods and beverages.
