Evaluation of Traffic Carried by ATM Wireless Access Link Controlled by MEDIAN Protocol

The paper points out on some limitations introduced by access points in wireless ATM network that have great impact on supporting end-to-end communication services with QoS requirements like CBR, VBR, ABR and GFR. Analysed access protocol is MEDIAN [5], which belongs to PRMA (Packet Reservation Medium Access) class and works under TDMA scheme. It appears that internal MEDIAN mechanisms (like frame structure, cell reservation mechanism and error protection) could radically reduce available link capacity designated for handling traffic with guaranteed QoS requirements. The formulas for evaluation this capacity are provided in the paper. Limitations for the CAC function are also discussed. Exemplary numerical results illustrating quality of transferred traffic are included.
