Analog gray scale in antiferroelectric liquid crystals

— The electro-optic behavior of antiferroelectric liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) has been investigated. By choosing proper addressing waveforms, multiplex-compatible analog gray-scale driving schemes have been found. The schemes have been tested at different temperatures for assessing their use in real displays. A temperature range where both the addressing voltage and transmission slope are constant have been determined. A wider temperature range where the addressing voltage is shifted, but the transmission slope is still constant, has been found as well. These ranges include room temperature and warmer temperatures achieved by backlit displays.
