The Harbour Entrances of Poole, Christchurch and Pagham

The close similarity which exists between the land-locked harbours of Poole, Christchurch and Pagham is apparent even on a small map. Each is situated towards the western end of a broad shallow bay in the lee of a projecting promontory (Fig. i). In each case the initial deep embayment, brought into being following a submergence of the coastal area, has been considerably modified by the growth of a sand or shingle embankment across its former wide entrance.
