Cryogenic Nano-Actuator for JWST

An extremely precise positioning mechanism has been developed for use in space for optical positioning of large mirrors. The design incorporates traditional mechanical components such as gears, bearings and flexures in a unique configuration covered by two patents. This linear actuator is capable of 10 nanometer position resolution over a range of 20 mm and can operate under cryogenic conditions. The design, assembly, construction and testing of this mechanism are presented.
