Bandwidth Management and Switch Buffer Allocation in High-speed Networks with Bursty Traffic

T he evolution of packet-switching technologyl presents different techniques used to transfer packets in the switches. Requirements for fast data rates, low delay and fast connection impacts the switch and interconnection network architecture. The architecture has evolved from computer-based switches to the switches using bus or ring as a shared medium, and finally, interconnection networks that introduced the principle of space-division switching. Future transmission systems will be based heavily on fiber optics technology. Fiber optic networks-the newest technology in data transfer-allow for high-speed data transfer.
