IFMIF’s new design: Status after 2 years of the EVEDA project

Abstract IFMIF is a major installation in the fusion programme to irradiate and characterize the fusion materials, under intense neutron field, necessary for contributing to the development of DEMO and the future fusion Power Plants. The Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities, launched mid 2007 in the framework of the Broader Approach agreement between Euratom and Japan, comprise four sub-projects: engineering design of IFMIF, accelerator prototype validation, liquid lithium loop validation, and irradiation test modules validation. After two years, many modifications have been brought to the former conceptual design, the most important ones being the change of technology for the high energy part of the accelerator, a totally new design for the Test Cell, new design of the lithium target assembly and the high flux test module with vertical setup. These modifications and other design improvements, and the general status of the project are overviewed.
