Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) For Sinusoidal Ripple Current (SRC) Charge of Li-ion Battery

In this paper, a Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) has been proposed to control the Sinusoidal Ripple Current (SRC) charge of the Li-ion batteries. Because current's frequency is variable in SRC charge method, conventional PI controller fails to track reference current. As SMC controller is a model base controller and is designed based on state space equations of the battery and battery charger, it does not have drawbacks of linear controllers. In order to design the controller, a full bridge DC/DC converter has been used as a battery charger and the resistive model of the battery have been used to build state space equations of the system. Also because the designed controller rule is function of transformer leakage and output filter inductances of full bridge DC/DC converter, 30% uncertainty for these parameters have been taken into account. Simulation results carried out with Simulink/MATLAB software shows the performance of the proposed controller compared to conventional PI controller.
