GENERATION MECHANISM OF TIRE/ROAD NOISE. PART 1: TIRE VIBRATION CAUSED BY ROAD ROUGHNESS

Tire/road noise reduction is essential for the abatement of road traffic noise. For this aim, the noise generation mechanisms have to be clarified. The authors performed two investigations, one into the tire vibration characteristics presented in this paper, and the other into pipe resonance phenomenon presented in Part 2. The tire tread vibration caused by road roughness is one of the noise generation mechanisms. A tire/road contact model is proposed for use in calculating the exciting force caused by the road roughness. This model assumes Hertz's contact between the tread rubber and pavement asperities. The tread vibration was estimated from the calculated exciting force using the frequency response data of the tread. For the covering abstract see IRRD E104312.
