Planning and launching the TPM pilot

This chapter provides an overview of the total productive maintenance (TPM) implementation process. It is important that the TPM implementation process build on current good practices and do this in a way that develops ownership of the need for continued change and business performance improvement; commitment to use TPM as a key part of the change process; and skills and capability in applying TPM techniques. The pilot process is designed to fulfill these objectives by creating a model of what TPM can achieve. The objectives of a senior-management workshop are essentially to gain senior-management commitment to the TPM process and explain how TPM helps deliver the business drivers and complements or integrates with other initiatives. Effective two-way communication is essential to avoid resistance to change: those who are involved in the TPM process must have a very clear idea of what it is all about and what the company and, more particularly, what they as individuals stand to gain.
