Presupposition and allegation revisited

Abstract The notion of allegation introduced in Hajicova (1971) is being reexamined from the point of view of more recent discussions of presupposition and is claimed to be of importance for a deeper insight into the nature of presuppositions. The study of presupposition and allegation as well as of the semantics of negation should be closely connected with the (underlying) distinction of topic and focus, which is rendered in the surface structures of the sentence by word order, intonation and stress, and by specific morphemic or syntactic means.
