Accurate Deicer and Anti-Icer Calibration

This article explains how changing from a fixed-orifice to a variable orifice nozzle makes it easier to correctly calibrate and control the amount of deicing and anti-icing liquids applied to roadways. Because these products must be spread evenly from a vehicle that accelerates from zero to 60 miles per hour, the sprayer must be capable of adjusting its flow. The article describes current fixed-orifice systems and why they don?t work sufficiently in most cases. By switching to variable-orifice nozzles proponents say they eliminate splashing, which can coat corrosive chemicals on nearby vehicles, and reduce the problems of under- or over-spraying. The article includes a brief related article about the inventor of variable-orifice nozzles.
