Speeds of Sound, Excess Isentropic Compressibility and Apparent Molar Compressibility Properties for Binary Mixtures of Dipropylene Glycol tert.-Butyl Ether with Methanol, 1-Propanol, 1-Pentanol and 1-Heptanol at 298.15K

Speeds of sound have been measured in dipropylene glycol tert.-butyl ether with methanol, 1-propanol, 1-pentanol, and 1-heptanol at 298.15K over the entire composition range using a NUSONIC velocimeter based on sing-around technique. The isentropic compressibility κS for all mixtures were estimated by combining the densities derived from excess molar volumes and the speeds of sound. The molar volume were multiplied by the isentropic compressibilities to obtain estimates of KS,m. The corresponding quantities KS,mE have also been calculated. The KS,mE values are negative over the entire range of composition for all mixtures with the exception of 1-pentanol which changes sign from negative to positive. The magnitude of KS,mE increases with the number of carbon atoms in the n-alcohol. The deviations uD of the speeds of sound from the values calculated for ideal mixtures have been obtained for all measured mole fractions. The behavior of KS,mE and uD with composition and the number of carbon atoms in the alcohol molecule is discussed.
