Stresses occurring under a repeated Brinell test

Indentation tests were performed on blocks of ‘Perspex’ mounted in a polariscope. This arrangement enabled the residual stresses to be visualised. A qualitative agreement is shown with results predicted by a simplified Prandtl-Reuss flow rule, though the theory does not follow accurately the stress state experienced by material loaded in a conventional Brinell hardness test.
