Standby and Uninterruptible Power Systems for Boosting the Reliability and Availability of Telecommunications and Computers

An ever-growing number of loads are placing more exacting demands on the power supply. The use of standby systems is recommended or even essential for all such exacting demands. Static UPS systems have acquired a leading position compared to other standby systems and will consolidate it still further in future. The most important characteristics of modern static UPS systems are dealt with and A comparison made with the guide values of various kinds of other UPS systems. The knowledge gained from the theory of reliability is assuming ever greater importance both in the development and manufacture as well as in the selection of UPS systems. The measures adopted to improve the reliability and availability of such systems are dealt with. The final part of the paper deals with future prospects in the field of UPS systems.
