Transient analysis of statistical multiplexing on an ATM link

The use of statistical multiplexing in ATM networks makes the characterization of the superposition of variable-bit-rate sources necessary. This superposition is modeled by an M/G/ infinity system, for which transient characteristics are addressed. Specifically, the congestion probability on a whole interval, the congestion duration, and the volume of information lost in a congestion period are studied. For these quantities, asymptotic estimates are derived in the framework of large deviations and the central limit theorem, respectively. Comparisons with simulation results show that the approximations obtained are satisfactory.<<ETX>>
