Advances and prospects of fiber supercapacitors

Flexible fiber electronic devices have attracted extensive research interest in the past few years due to their unique features and potential applications in the next generation wearable electronic devices and/or smart textiles. Various fiber-type energy storage devices are highly demanded to store or power the available fiber electronic devices. Among them, supercapacitors (SCs) act as promising candidates that can offer long cycle life, high power density, safety and so on. This review article explores the recent research progress in the development of both symmetric and asymmetric fiber SCs, their configurations and fabrication designs. A broad overview is given of the design of various fiber electrode materials along with their performance and characterization for the fabrication of flexible fiber SCs. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects for the development of high performance flexible fiber SCs are highlighted.
