Changing Roles of Paraprofessionals in Public Libraries

Abstract Roles and functions of paraprofessionals working in public libraries are surveyed and issues surrounding paraprofessionals as a result of the role change are reviewed. The effectiveness of handling new responsibilities and acquisition of new skills by paraprofessionals through training and other professional development means are examined. Suggestions are put forward for preparing paraprofessionals for the new responsibilities highlighting the need for more effective training. Further studies of the changing roles of paraprofessionals using more rigorous methodologies are proposed.
