Propeller-rotor whirl flutter: A state-of-the-art review

Abstract The basic phenomenon of propeller whirl instability is described for conventional and V/STOL aircraft; theoretical and experimental investigations of the problem from the time it first became of concern on contemporary turboprop aircraft to the present are summarized; and some consideration is given to possible future configurations having hinged or highly flexible propeller-rotors.
