Interpretation of the CO2 absorption bands observed in the Venus infrared spectrum between 1 and 2.5 μm

Abstract CO 2 planetary absorption lines observed in the near infrared spectrum of the Venus atmosphere have been assigned between 3900 and 10 000 cm −1 . The spectrum has been recorded in October and November 1973 by P. Connes and G. Michel with an interferometer coupled to the 200-in. telescope of the Mount Palomar Observatory. In addition to the minor constituents HCl, HF, and CO, the main absorbing molecule is the carbon dioxide molecule. About 8000 vibration-rotation lines belonging to 268 CO 2 vibrational transitions have been identified, involving a total of 238 levels of 7 isotopes, 127 among them for the main isotope; 25 of these levels had never been observed before.
