An overview of heuristic optimization techniques for power system expansion planning and design

Summary form only given. This panel contribution focuses on an overview of modern heuristic optimization techniques for power system expansion planning and design. Issues relating to power system expansion planning and design are discussed. Challenges with conventional methods are identified. Advantages with employing heuristic optimization techniques are presented. Two examples are described to demonstrate their applications in power system expansion planning: (1) ant colony optimization in transmission network planning and (2) advanced genetic algorithms in distribution network planning.
