Located on the premises of the firm, Burgplatz 1, Braunschweig, the archive contains, very roughly estimated, between 150,000 and 300,000 items. Of these perhaps three-quarters are pre-1907, and thus there are most probably well over 100,000 items from the period 1786-1906 and possibly more than 200,000. There are roughly 5,000 correspondents represented in the collection, and of the 1,5002,000 authors in the Verlagskatalog of 1911 probably about half appear in the archive. Table 1 is a list, extracted from the card catalogue of the archive, of correspondences with well-known physical scientists; the most voluminous of these correspondences are with eminent German chemists.
