Foreign patenting and trade with regard to competitiveness

Abstract Trends and patterns of foreign patenting activities in the period 1976–1987 (the post-oil crisis period) are statistically compared among five major industrial countries in relation to their trade patterns. The relationships are interpreted in terms of industrial competitiveness. Ideal types of foreign patenting strategies are presented with regard to the competitiveness of countries. Possible effects of governmental organization systems and entrepreneurships on behaviors of foreign patenting and trade are discussed.
