Structural dynamic design of a footbridge under pedestrian loading

The study of the effects caused by human excitation on structures has gained a significant evolution during the last few years. The increased understanding that followed the first studies is difficult to codify and is therefore not yet clearly stated in regulatory guidance on dynamic design of pedestrian bridges. Two of the main issues of this analysis were to decide on the correct approach to model pedestrian-induced vibrations, especially in the case of crowd loading, as well as to define the appropriate verification criteria in order to assess whether the footbridge meets the main safety requirements.
